Job description
CogStack (https://cogstack.org/; https://github.com/CogStack/) is an award-winning ecosystem of tools and workflows that facilitate the ingestion, structuring, organising and visualisation of Electronic Health Record (EHR) data built by a multidisciplinary team of software developers, machine learning engineers and NLP researchers, clinical and health informaticians. The CogStack team is at the forefront of building impactful solutions through partnership with UK NHS Trusts and international healthcare providers (e.g. Australia and the Netherlands), tackling real world clinical problems supporting use cases from state-of-the-art clinical research through to translational research delivering innovative solutions for direct patient care. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU9ls9J9AmM).
The CogStack team benefits from sitting within a leading programme of clinical, health and bioinformatics at the Department of Biostatistics and Health Informatics and forms a key component of both the Centre for Translational Informatics, Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) National Text Analytics Programme and the London AI Centre for Value Based Healthcare.
Major funding has been awarded by the Office for Life Sciences, InnovateUK and recently a Stage 3 AI for Health and Social Care Award from NHSx to scale this technology across the NHS and beyond. As such, this is an exciting time to be joining the team as they embark on next steps, which could involve the opportunity for the postholder playing a role in CogStack as a University spin out. The ecosystem has already been recognised in Government reports to the Chief Medical Officer, NHSx AI reports, NHS Tech Plan and keynote speeches by the Health Secretary.
The postholder will contribute to the technical development, deployment across the NHS (currently ~10 major Trusts) and maintenance of the ecosystem, which includes the CogStack-Nifi (https://github.com/CogStack/CogStack-Nifi) and MedCAT (https://github.com/CogStack/MedCAT) projects alongside any deployment specific enhancements and specialisations.
The work will include contributing to our clinical Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools, algorithms and interfaces used by clinical specialists. This includes Foresight (or MedGPT), a novel GPT-based pipeline that is trained on NHS data to forecast future medical events such as disorders, medications, symptoms and interventions ( https://foresight.sites.er.kcl.ac.uk/; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i7faJV-hg4; https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.08072).
The post holder will be expected to be able to contribute to the following areas:
The successful candidate will have at least an MSc, or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline (e.g, computer science, NLP, deep learning, clinical informatics, software development, machine learning). Relevant data analysis and programming skills (e.g. Python, R) are required.
This post will be offered for at least 3 years initially, with the possibility of extension
