Team Leader/Supervisor (Specialist Technician - Engineering)

The Zepler Institute at the University of Southampton is a world leading research centre for photonics, optical fibres and novel glasses. The Mountbatten building is a highly serviced building that houses a cleanroom complex on level 1 and optical laboratories on level 2. The plant equipment that supports these facilities range from air compressors and vacuum generators, to air handlers, toxic fume scrubbers and ultra-pure water generators. There is a team of three plant engineers and this role is for the supervisor of the section. It is important that you are an experienced M&E plant engineer with an eye for detail, knowledge of compliance activities (such as L8), have strong mechanical and electrical skills with the ability to train those in the team to be able to deal with breakdowns and sub-par performing plant equipment. You must have experience in fault finding on plant equipment using your experience to ensure fixes are implemented, in-house where appropriate, or employing approved contractors if necessary. You must also have good computer literacy to be able to interact with the many University systems in place.  This role will be part of the on-call team (covering 1 in 4) for out-of-hours emergencies, which has a premium attached to it.

The University is a signatory of the Technician Commitment  and a partner affiliate of the National Technician Development Centre (NTDC)  and is committed to supporting our technical staff. We offer a wide range of opportunities including networking, mentoring, training, and professional registration (if desired).
