About the team/job

MGnify is EMBL-EBI’s microbiome sequence data analysis resource, which performs the archiving, assembly and analysis of metagenomics data.

As the number and diversity of datasets continually grow, and as we expand the downstream analyses available in MGnify, the website and API endpoints concomitantly need to make these new data available. Alongside the website, the post-holder can expect to support and develop programmatic access tools like MG-Toolkit, MGnifyR, and the MGnify Notebook Server, as well as updating the guidance for their utility. Almost all of MGnify’s work is performed in open-source codebases.

Your role

In this role you will collaborate with other developers in the team to:

  • Design and implement website interfaces to display new data outputs
  • Expand the Django data model and API to expose new data types
  • Optimise the current MGnify API, to improve performance and scalability
  • Develop microservices and workflows to integrate bioinformatics tools like search
  • Support, develop, and create documentation and code examples for users from all proficiency levels
  • Troubleshoot issues and perform appropriate fixes in a timely fashion

Other responsibilities include

  • Answering user queries and participating in stand-up meetings
  • Presenting developments at team meetings and/or to collaborators inside and outside EMBL
  • Supporting best practice in software development, including through code peer-reviews 

You have

  • Educated to Masters-level in a computational or related discipline, or have a demonstrable equivalent level of experience.
  • Experience in Python development, including a framework like Django
  • Experience in front-end development, JavaScript and libraries (e.g. React)
  • Unix/Linux
  • Attention to detail and ability to problem solve
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player, as well as an ability to work on problems in isolation
  • Knowledge of collaborative coding practices 

You might also have

  • Experience writing robust, quality code in a production environment
  • Experience developing REST APIs, that interface with backend databases and data stores
  • Experience using relational databases (MySQL and/or PostgreSQL), programmatic access, schema design and optimisation
  • Experience with NoSQL databases, e.g. MongoDB
