The opportunity

The post-holder of this role will provide administrative support to our Subject Area History of Art to assist in the effective management and smooth-running of the Subject Areas.

The successful candidate will provide HR and finance administrative support, as well as support for academic Heads, research seminars/events, and a range of staff committees.

The post holder will not provide direct student or programme support but they will be a key point of contact for the Subject Areas and may refer queries to relevant colleagues within the area or elsewhere in the University. Subject Area Administrators normally liaise with a wide range of colleagues.  All members of the team provide cover for each other to ensure adequate service when other members of the team are on leave or to maintain adequate service at peak times; this includes support within the Subject Areas and across the wider ECA.

Although this is not a student facing role, the post holder will indirectly contribute to student experience. Any member of the team may at times deal with student enquiries and so the post holder can play a key role in creating a welcoming environment for students. 

Skills and Attributes for Success

  • Educated to at least N/SVQ 3 or equivalent level, plus previous relevant HR and/or Finance administrative work experience.
  • Excellent organisational, administrative and demonstrably strong time/task management skills: particularly important when handling competing demands.
  • Ability to exercise judgement and initiative to work without direct supervision and prioritise own work within the annual academic cycle.
  • Ability to quickly master new systems and processes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal competence. Ability to form and sustain excellent working relationships.
  • Ability to work as a team member and motivate others.
  • Attention to accuracy and details.
  • A strongly developed customer-focused approach.
