We are looking for a Maintenance Plumbing and Heating Engineer) for working on our Plumbing and HVAC systems in accordance with the University of Essex policies and procedures. Please note appointment will be made as Maintenance Craftsperson (Mechanical).
You will deal with on-site maintenance, mechanical installations and testing associated with the building services, plant and equipment in all of the premises owned and operated by the University of Essex.
This post is open as a developmental opportunity at a Grade 5 level also (please see job pack for more information).
Appointments at Grade 6 will be expected to take a lead in the duties; appointments at Grade 5 will work more closely with colleagues and under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Capital Development.
It is anticipated that appointees to Grade 5 will progress onto Grade 6 provided they are able to meet the additional responsibilities, skills and expertise demanded by the higher grade within a 12 month period.
About you
The ideal candidate will have a mechanical background with experience in plumbing, drainage and HVAC maintenance and will have achieved an industry recognised qualification (NVQ Level 2 or equivalent) (working towards for Garde 5). You will have the ability to work both individually and as part of a team and be able to deal with a variety of situations or tasks whilst under pressure and will be comfortable in dealing with difficult situations whilst always maintaining a professional and positive attitude.
You will be expected to install new plant, equipment and services, and will be responsible for carrying out the full planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) programme of works on all plumbing and HVAC systems. Additionally, the post holder will be working to manuals, instructions, drawings and specifications without direct supervision.
It is essential that the successful candidate is able to demonstrate experience in the maintenance of commercial/industrial and domestic plumbing and HVAC supplies (desirable for Grade 5).
The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively, and is willing to learn new methods of working, showing flexibility where required.

Estates and Campus Services, a section of over 700 staff, is organised into twelve main operational areas and a number of central support functions.
The site is operational 365 days a year and the role requires the successful candidate to work on a rota basis.
