The Role

Maynooth University seeks an outstanding academic to join our staff as Professor of Early Childhood Education. The person appointed will have an excellent record in teaching, research, scholarship, publication and academic leadership. They will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching and research profile of the University, and to provide ongoing leadership for the discipline.

Professors will be expected to provide significant intellectual leadership through a demonstrated commitment to both education and research, and also contribute to the effective leadership and management of the Department, the Faculty and the University.

This post is open to applicants with a doctorate, a distinguished academic career, and a strong research profile in Early Childhood Education. They will be expected to add value to the Department’s research culture by bringing high-level expertise in research-funding applications, publications in quality refereed journals and to develop the understanding of the research, pedagogy and practice of the discipline.

The appointee will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching and research profile of the Faculty and Maynooth University. They should have demonstrable experience of leading innovative research, of supervising postgraduate and postdoctoral research, and of research collaboration on a national and an international level. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership in the Department in the enhancement of its research culture, teaching portfolio and public engagement across all of the Departmental Programmes.

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential criteria:

  • Doctorate in an appropriate discipline.
  • An outstanding academic record as a university teacher and an educational innovator in Early Childhood Education with an excellent understanding of child development.
  • Strong background in research methods.
  • An outstanding record of research and scholarship, reflected in an excellent publication profile.
  • The capacity to offer strong academic leadership within the department and across the University.
  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team building and communication skills.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with a wide variety of internal and external colleagues and organisations.
  • Supervised doctoral students to completion.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience working with children in early childhood education.
  • Expertise in curriculum and pedagogy in early childhood education.
  • Specialist research interest suited to the field of early childhood education.
