Facilities Services

Our teams deliver a wide range of services for the University, ranging from food outlets, sports facilities, accommodation to grounds maintenance and estates management across the Colchester campus that is home to Wivenhoe House a luxury hotel, alongside award-winning parkland and the Southend and Loughton campuses.

The work we carry out supports the University in the development of new facilities, helps to create a vibrant campus community and supports new, exciting opportunities.

About the role

The post holder will oversee the complete operational management and maintenance of the Universities Grounds at Colchester, Southend and Loughton including the outside external sports facilities. They will manage their own time, the Grounds Section team and directly the Deputy Grounds Manager and Head Grounds Person to achieve a very high standard.

You will:

  • Lead, develop, manage and deliver the sections operational and long-term maintenance budgets.
  • Plan, implement and seek funding for projects within the External Estate Development Plan.
  • Have overall responsibility for developing and maintaining the Universities external Sports facilities, pitches etc.
  • Have overall responsibility for sections Health and Safety ensuring compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act, particularly in relation to directly employed staff, their equipment, space occupied, RAMS and insurance.
  • Plan and execute grounds maintenance to produce a high quality ecologically balanced environment.
  • Plan and manage the regular grounds work undertaken by external contractors and suppliers and ensuring that the appropriate work is undertaken safely and within the university’s financial regulations.

About you

You will have an excellent understanding of grounds and specifically that of an historic setting. You will also have experience in Sports Turf and budget planning and will desire to produce a high level of service. You will be a driven individual and have an excellent attention to detail. You will have:

  • GCSE Grade C, or equivalent, in English and Mathematics and 3 other
  • NVQ in Amenity Horticulture and Sports Field Maintenance level 2 or equivalent
  • NVQ Level 3 in Management or similar qualification
