To deliver its sustainable top 30 ambition Swansea University needs a professional services workforce with the differentiated skills necessary to ensure that it can deliver excellence through efficient and effective systems and processes that harness innovations in technology.

To liaise with the Support Coordinator to ensure that students receive the support they require and are entitled to. The Practical Support Assistant will be required to help students organise their study and workload and assist students with time management such as timetabling and preparation for exams. The Practical Support Assistant can support the student by carrying books/bags and carrying equipment. The support received by students is funded via the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) and administered by Swansea University.

The post will involve, some, or all the following activities: 

  • To arrange mutually convenient and suitable times to meet on a 1:1 basis to provide individual support.
  • Assisting the student(s) with time management such as timetabling, working out a work plan for completing assignments and preparation for the exams.
  • Provide practical advice and guidance to the student in a non-judgemental way.
  • Help students organise their study and workload.
  • Offer guidance to enable student to find relevant resources and reading materials to enable them to meet the study/assignment expectations.
  • To support the student by carrying books/bags, open doors, lift and carry equipment under the student’s instruction.
  • Offer support and encourage student to clarify their thinking and develop plans.
  • To keep the Disability Support Coordinator informed of any planned absences at the start of the academic year.
  • To provide adequate notice to the students(s) and the Disability Support Coordinator if you are unable to attend (preferably a minimum of one week).
  • To work with the Disability Support Coordinator to provide accurate working availability.
  • To be able to relate to the students whom they are providing support and to work independently.
  • To manage their own diary to provide as much support as they are able to commit to, whilst adhering to the University’s working hour’s policies and any VISA restrictions.
  • To work at all times with due regard to requirements of GDPR and ensure the appropriate storage and handling of sensitive personal data, considering any student requests for confidentiality while responding appropriately to the institution’s duty of care to others.
