Create the possible with the Living Systems Institute

University of Exeter – Living Systems Institute (LSI)

The Living Systems Institute (LSI) is a flagship interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Exeter. The ambition of the Institute is to to decode the complexity of living systems across scales, from sub-molecular to organismal, and from microbe to human. Our shared mission is to discover, understand and control the fundamental rules of life.

Launched in 2017, the LSI is a unique blend of physicists, mathematicians, engineers, biologists and biomedical scientists housed in purpose-designed research and collaboration space. We are now expanding our research programmes through recruitment to eight permanent leading roles across our research themes:

Physics of Life

Mathematics of Life

Engineering Life

We seek pioneering researchers who, like us, are motivated by scientific discovery and embrace an ethos of excellence, integrity and collaboration.

Opportunities in the next phase of LSI research

You will be an exceptional investigator, who will enhance the capabilities and profile of LSI and strengthen our cross-cutting thematic research. If you are an innovative scientist seeking a well-resourced, dynamic and collaborative environment that will enable your next breakthrough, we would like to hear from you.

With roles across the academics career lifecycle; from Senior Lecturer to full Professor; you are a researcher with original and exciting projects in interdisciplinary life science. We welcome applications from individuals with training in mathematics, physics, engineering or computational science as well as biological or biomedical research.

In addition to leading your own research team, you will work with the LSI Leadership team to shape the institute research agenda, attract strategic collaborative funding, grow the global reputation of the Institute, and nurture the next generation of researchers.

Life in the LSI

The posts will be based in the LSI’s purpose built research facility with affiliation to the adjacent relevant Departments. LSI sits at the heart of the University of Exeter’s award winning Streatham Campus, alive with green spaces in the beautiful city of Exeter in the UK’s Southwest.
