About Foreign Languages Department

The Foreign Languages Department is committed to the teaching and research of English for both general and academic purposes. Against the backdrop of curriculum reform in SUMC over the years, the department has launched a series of English curriculum reforms in line with the National College English Curriculum Requirements and the learning needs of medical students. The current English curriculum is composed of three levels of courses: General English (for the first academic year) – English for General Academic Purposes (for the second academic year) – English for Specific Academic Purposes (for the third academic year).

In these English courses, the training of critical thinking is consistently underscored, while team-based learning and project-based learning are encouraged. The students’ academic language skills, information management skills and critical thinking skills are sharpened through an array of inside and outside class activities such as academic oral presentation and poster presentation. In particular, Academic English course adopts blended teaching approach by effectively combining established MOOC resources, online learning and classroom interaction. It has been selected as National Top-notch Online-and-Offline Blended Undergraduate Course by the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China.

Multidisciplinary teaching and research is highly encouraged and boosted in the Foreign Languages Department at SUMC. The cooperation between the English and medical teaching teams is successfully carried out in course design and research in academic literacy, medical humanistic development, EMI (English as Medium of Instruction) medical education, etc.
