Senior Laboratory Technician (Grain Quality)

Working hours: 37 hours per week, Monday-Friday

ABOUT THE JOB

We are recruiting a Senior Laboratory Technician to join our friendly small team to undertake evaluation of quality characteristics in the major agricultural crop species.

As a Senior Laboratory Technician in grain quality, your key duties include:

  • Preparation and perform a wide range of analytical techniques on seeds and agricultural produce.
  • Managing the workflow, prioritising samples, collation of data and report production ready for the Grain Quality Manager
  • Train and supervise temporary members of staff
  • Monitor and calibrate laboratory equipment to meet QA requirements

Due to workload peaks, it may not be possible to take holiday at harvest time from August to October.

This role involves handling seed and manual handling of bags/sacks of grain up to 25kg along with regular exposure to dust from milling grain samples for analysis.

Location

The role is based at NIAB Park Farm, Histon, Cambridge, CB24 9NZ, 4 miles from Cambridge city centre. Free on-site parking and linked by cycle ways and regular buses to Cambridge city centre and railway station. Close to Junction 32 of A14, with easy access to M11, A10 and A11.

ABOUT YOU

Essential requirements

Ideally you have:

  • A levels in a science based subject or equivalent qualification / experience
  • Good communication skills both written and oral
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good numeracy and data handling skills
  • Good IT Skills – MS Word, Excel, Sharepoint
  • Attention to detail
  • Able to work alone or part of a small team

Desirable requirements

Ideally you will also have:

  • A science degree preferably in the field of chemistry
  • Some experience of agriculture or field trial systems
  • Prior experience of working in a grain or malting laboratory or a high throughput laboratory
