Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS) seeks two innovative quantitative scientists to deliver statistical consultancy and develop a portfolio of applied methodological research. In these roles you will be able to collaborate with research scientists in application areas such as animal health, welfare and behaviour, crop, plant and livestock production and disease, agricultural emissions, biodiversity, agri-food systems, and agri-economics and social sciences.
BioSS has an international reputation for methodological development in statistics, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics and statistical genomics. We offer a stimulating and supportive working environment, with over 50 staff and students at several locations across Scotland, developing and applying quantitative methods in animal health & welfare, plant and crop science, ecology and environmental science, and human health and nutrition. We collaborate widely with other leading UK and international institutions, providing quantitative input to research to tackle pressing global problems, such as the impacts of climate change, emerging health challenges, and threats to food and water security. Through our work in consultancy, training and applied research, BioSS aims to provide a better understanding of uncertainty, variation and risk. For more information about BioSS see https://www.bioss.ac.uk/.
The posts represent excellent long-term career opportunities for suitably qualified statisticians or quantitative scientists with statistical experience, offering a stimulating mix of work including: consultancy and collaboration with scientists at leading UK research institutions; interactions with other quantitative experts within and beyond BioSS; a time allocation within which to develop an area of quantitative methodological research. These posts offer many opportunities for career advancement in a supportive environment at BioSS as we continue to grow as a strong centre of quantitative applied research and consultancy, and will be ideal for scientists who want to build a portfolio of research and consultancy projects (postholders will be eligible for UKRI funding). Post-holders will address real-world problems, collaborating with other research organisations, industry, government agencies and policy-makers and academia. We are therefore looking for statisticians with excellent verbal and written communication skills, who are enthusiastic about communicating their work with different audiences and collaborators.
The deadline for applications is 4th June 2023.
The posts are permanent, and will be based at the BioSS centre in Edinburgh; we are seeking to appoint at either Band E (salary £40,769) or D (salary £33,595), depending on experience.
Potential applicants may contact Dr Sarah Brocklehurst to discuss these positions: contact details available from https://www.bioss.ac.uk/people/sarah.html.
