Research Associate in Modelling the Biophysics of Sinus Infections (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £35,308 to £43,155 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 25th May 2023
Closes: 18th June 2023
Job Ref: LE36858

Applications are invited for two Research Associates in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics to work on Modelling the Biophysics of Sinus Infections with Professor Eric Lauga. The positions are part of a recently funded collaborative project to model experimentally and theoretically chronic rhinosinusitis (inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses) led by Co-PIs Teuta Pilizota (Edinburgh) and Eric Lauga (Cambridge). The project includes clinicians, physicists, biologists and applied mathematicians, across several departments in both Cambridge and Edinburgh.

The successful applicants will hold (or be about to complete) a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Biophysics, Engineering or a closely related field and will join a rapidly expanding effort in biological physics within DAMTP and a large research community in fluid mechanics.

The positions will have an emphasis on theoretical and computational modelling for the continuum mechanics of biophysical systems.

The ideal candidates will have extensive training in applied and computational mathematics, in particular numerical methods applied to fluid mechanics, viscous flows, interfacial fluid mechanics, rheology and complex fluids, and a strong track record of theoretical research at the intersection of mathematics and biological physics. Expertise in biophysical modelling and image analysis are also desirable (e.g. agent-based modelling of bacterial dynamics). Candidates should also have a strong taste for interdisciplinary research problems, in particular relating to bacteria and infectious diseases, and interest in close collaborations with experimentalists and clinicians.

Duties:

-  developing and conducting individual and collaborative research projects and writing scientific publications for peer-review;

-  plan and communicate material of a technical nature in seminars and conferences relating to the research area;

-  be able to build internal and external contacts relating to the research area;

-  assist the two co-PIs and the co-Is with the management of the funded research project;

-  supervision of student projects and the development of student research skills.
