The University of Leeds has a long history of advanced, dedicated, research computing provision to our research communities. As part of a far reaching and ground-breaking Digital Transformation, the University is now seeking to take the next step in the evolution of research computing into the digital era. The Director of Digital Research will take the lead in defining the future strategy, operating model, service offering and roadmap to deliver a world class, rounded and tailored Digital Research service for the University.

The Director of Digital Research is a newly created, critical role offering the opportunity to deliver the efficient, modern, Digital Research service, which aims to enable vital research breakthroughs. The University is seeking a strategic scientific or research computing leader with the ability to engage researchers, enable value from research and to take a broader and more mature Digital Research service forward.

The Role

  • Lead and develop all aspects of research computing at Leeds encompassing not just traditional high performance computing (HPC) provision but also elements such as research software, training and engagement. Operate as a senior leader across the University and act as a trusted partner to the research community. Build positive peer-to-peer relationships with key research stakeholders. Demonstrate the ‘art of the possible’, stimulate future demand for, and widen the scope of Digital Research services offered.
  • Craft a well-planned, digital research strategy and roadmap which will take advantage of contemporary best practice in compute, data and storage.
  • Provide strategic leadership to the Digital Research function. Coach and mentor the team, encouraging clarity of responsibility, collaboration, and efficiency of process. Act as a beacon of best practice through the adoption of contemporary industry disciplines in service and project management.

The Candidate

  • Will have had significant exposure to research-driven industries or institutions coupled with the ability to understand the needs of complex research populations. You should demonstrate experience of shaping high calibre research/scientific computing teams in research intensive environments.
  • With intellectual horsepower, gravitas and outstanding communication skills, you will have the proven ability to build relationships with a diverse and complex range of stakeholders, both within the University and with external partner organisations.
  • An enthusing and inspiring people leader, you will demonstrate a track record of building well-structured, cohesive teams, whilst encouraging the adoption of contemporary technology techniques and ways of working.
