The School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of associate professor of aesthetics and culture based at the Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology.
The appointment is full time and tenured and begins on 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
Aesthetics and Culture is an interdisciplinary research community and study programme with a focus on the interdependencies of artistic and cultural practices, everyday aesthetics, cultural and creative industries, cultural institutions and policies in modern and contemporary society. As an associate professor, you will contribute to strengthening Aesthetics and Culture’s focus on the role of the fields of cultural and artistic practices in addressing societal challenges and/or on the values and ecologies of everyday culture, publicly funded culture, and cultural and creative industries. We expect that the applicant's research is solidly founded on state-of-the-art cultural theory and analysis.
The successful applicant will primarily be expected to teach on the BA and MA degree programmes in Aesthetics and Culture.
A majority of Aesthetics and Culture’s graduates find employment within the artistic, cultural and creative sectors; others build careers in adjacent fields. A common thread in our pedagogical philosophy is the ambition to encourage students’ creative and societal agency when working with art and culture. The preferred applicant shares this ambition, which should be documented in their academic qualifications and/or practical experience.
In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated applicant who will enhance the research and teaching profiles of the department nationally and internationally as well as contribute to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.
Research
We are looking for an innovative and dedicated applicant who has produced theoretical and empirical research at an international level on the societal role of artistic and cultural practices, everyday aesthetics, cultural creative industries, cultural institutions and policies.
The successful applicant will be expected to pursue their own avenues of research within this field and hence contribute to the further development of international academic knowledge and methodologies as well as to the core curriculum of the degree programmes in Aesthetics and Culture. In addition, the applicant is expected to take part in interdisciplinary work with other units at Aarhus University. Preference will be given to applicants whose work demonstrates theoretical, analytical and practical expertise in the societal role and value of art and culture related to two or more of the following areas:
