Description
Brown University’s Department of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Musicology/Ethnomusicology effective July 2024. We seek a scholar who can engage collaboratively with and/or complement our Black Music Lab, an interdisciplinary consortium of scholars and creative practitioners exploring a range of Black musics. This scholar might specialize in Black music, or could work at the intersections of Black musics and other musics. We are especially interested in scholars engaging with questions of race, gender, and sexuality, but are open to a wide range of areas of expertise. The successful candidate will teach three courses per year, take part in advising and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students, and play an active role in our Musicology/Ethnomusicology PhD Program and in the life of the Department and University more generally, including taking on service roles as appropriate.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to the commitment of the Music Department and University. Accordingly, the Music Department seeks qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
This position is scheduled to begin July 2024 and the initial appointment is for four years.
The Department of Music, part of the Perelman Arts District at Brown University, has approximately 80 undergraduate concentrators, and runs two Ph.D. programs, one in Musicology & Ethnomusicology, the other in Music & Multimedia Composition. The department also hosts a number of performance ensembles including BU Orchestra, BU Chorus, Jazz Band, Wind Symphony, World Music Ensemble, Electroacoustic Improvisation Ensemble, Old Time String Band, Javanese Gamelan, and Ghanaian Drumming and Dancing.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have an PhD in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Africana/African American/Black Studies, Jazz Studies, Cultural Studies, or another related field; we will also consider candidates who are ABD with a defense date set before 31 May 2024.
