--------

The University of Hull (UH) is in an exciting and visionary period of transformation. From the Vice Chancellor down, at all levels the university is seeking to advance the rankings regionally, nationally and internationally.

Due to an amalgamation of the department of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, UH are now looking to appoint a leader for a new role – Head of School: Natural Sciences.

Leading by example, this is a unique opportunity to be a part of the positive changes occurring across the university.

The School of Natural Sciences aims to be amongst the best Schools in the UK and attract top students worldwide.  It will be part of the step change philosophy to deliver a strategic agenda linked to the University Strategic Plan, combining academic and research excellence with a reputation for commercial acumen, innovation and income generation.

The Head is the senior executive of the School, and is responsible to the Dean for the effective and efficient management and administration of the School’s full range of activities.  The Head ensures that the School attains its agreed objectives and KPIs, creates an intellectually stimulating and culturally vibrant, pleasant, safe and eco-friendly environment in which its students and staff can flourish.

The success of the University in achieving the strategic goals and objectives set out in its vision and Strategic Plan depends on its ability to implement the plan – and growth in the Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology offerings is an important element.

It is on the School level where a number of the key thrusts of the Strategic Plan are implemented, and the University will be looking towards its Heads to take the lead there.

The post holder will:

  • lead by example, especially in the area of research within Natural Sciences.
  • hold a strong research record and preferably experience in both universities and industry.
  • be an advocate for the field of Natural Sciences in Hull and the Humber, nationally and internationally.

Core Duties and Responsibilities of the post

  1. To provide general and academic leadership and vision in the School
  2. To provide academic leadership in relation to learning and teaching, research and enterprise, and engagement.
  3. To manage and administer the School within the University’s delegation framework, ensuring that the governance, management and organisational structures and processes of the School are effective, efficient and transparent
  4. To prepare, with the Dean and colleagues, the academic and business strategy (and budget) for the School in accordance with the University’s Strategic Plan.
  5. To develop and actively pursue an income generation strategy from external sources to enhance the growth and diversification of income streams (particularly with regard to research and enterprise).
  6. To raise the research profile, output and impact of the School
