The University of Reading Department of Computer Science is expanding. The current phase of recruitment includes a new academic post, at the Associate Professor Level. We are seeking a new staff member who can enhance both teaching and research, contributing to thriving cutting edge courses and excellent impactful research.

This opportunity is for an individual whose Computer Science research can contribute to growing data science and AI research fields including (but not limited) machine learning, data mining, big data analytics devoted to algorithms, techniques & applications for data-driven knowledge discovery from big data. Particular areas of growth in the Department of Computer Science are explainable and interpretable AI, (knowledge) graphs, deep learning, computer vision/image analysis, smart Internet of Things, Intelligent communication & natural language processing.

The Department of Computer Science is embedded in a world-renowned research nexus of excellence in environmental science alongside a world-class Meteorology Department, with strong links to national centres in atmospheric and earth observation science, the UK Met Office, and the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, ECMWF. The new staff will strengthen the ongoing collaboration with National Natural History Museum, RBG Kew, and digital enterprises in the region and participate in the Thame Valley AI-Hub.

You will have:

  • a track record which includes impactful publications, and one or both of the acquisition of research funding and the establishment (and delivery) of substantial collaborative activities
  • whilst the specific area of research is open, applications are particularly sought from those whose interests fall into one or more of the following areas: machine learning, data mining, big data analytics, data-driven knowledge, explainable and interpretable AI, (knowledge) graphs, computer vision/image analysis, smart Internet of Things, Intelligent communication and natural language processing
  • Commitment in and passion for teaching and learning in broad computer science areas, and supporting students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Ability to use initiative to problem solve issues effectively – including the ability to reflect on students’ learning experiences and address areas of concern
  • Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to engage and work with a range of people as part of a team
  • experience and/or ability to demonstrate potential to lead in research and/or teaching.
