The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is rapidly developing into one of the leading technology and innovation hubs of the world. UM is placed in 201-250 bracket in the THE World University Rankings and placed No. 254 in the QS World University Rankings. The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of Head of Department of Sociology. 

Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology offers Bachelor, Master, and PhD programmes in Sociology and Criminology, and there is a productive and diverse faculty drawn from many parts of the world, including the United States, Canada, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. We have a strong research portfolio focusing on migration, demography, political sociology, child and adolescent development, comparative criminology, policing, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, intimate partner violence, and qualitative & quantitative research methods. The Faculty of Social Sciences is seeking to appoint a senior academic who is visionary, passionate, and dedicated to lead this Department of around 15 colleagues towards future success and making positive impacts in Macao and the Greater China. 

Head of Department

The appointee is expected to have an excellent record of research and teaching and international reputation in mainstream of sociology, such as family, gender, migration, stratification, inequality, health, education, population, methods, and computational social science. He or she should also have leadership experience, be able to contribute to collaborative research and programme development in the Faculty and the University, and serve the community with innovation. The appointee will be at the rank of full professor or above. 

  • A PhD degree in Sociology;
  • Record of distinguished scholarship and teaching excellence;
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills;
  • Proven administrative experience in another university;
  • Global outlook combined with knowledge of the education environment in the Greater China;
  • Ability to command respect from both internal and external stakeholders;
  • Demonstrable success in fostering external cooperation, knowledge transfer, and community relationship;
  • Proficiency in English is required as it is the working language, while knowledge in Chinese/Portuguese will be an advantage.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in 2024.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,210,300 (approximately USD149,420) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. Apart from competitive remuneration, UM offers a wide range of benefits, such as medical insurance, provident fund, on-campus accommodation/housing allowance and other subsidies.
