The Role


The purpose of this new post within the School of Psychology is to contribute to the development of an exciting new pathway in the Psychology of Ageing. Newcastle University is a global leader in ageing research addressing a spectrum of age-related challenges, working in partnership with the NHIP Academy, the flagship of the Newcastle Health Innovation Partners programme NHIP Academy - Newcastle Health Innovation Partners, but has had little input from psychology thus far.

We are interested in applicants from diverse backgrounds in Psychology (e.g., Neuropsychology, Cognition, Perception) who have experience in and straddle the boundaries between clinical, teaching, and research areas related to ageing. The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will also connect with relevant research themes and units outside the School of Psychology.

Key Accountabilities

  • To develop and contribute to teaching and module leadership in the area of the Psychology of Ageing
  • To embed research and clinical expertise into teaching where possible, but notably through the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate projects in the School
  • To contribute to the development of new markets for taught programmes (e.g. MSc in Health and Ageing)
  • To participate in external activities related to teaching, research, and/or clinics. Leadership regarding external partnerships/collaborations with relevant organisations
  • To lead on and develop research into ageing and/or related clinical activities (e.g. assessments, interventions)
  • To develop a research programme and ensure that results, new knowledge and insights are achieved within relevant timeframe, cost and quality standards
  • To disseminate research results through appropriate channels
  • To contribute to collaborations with University’s Research Institutes and age-related groups where possible
  • To act as a personal tutor to a group of students
  • To undertake administrative duties as deemed necessary, including participation in relevant School and Faculty committees and activities. A substantive leadership role would be negotiated with the Head of School

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • Specialist knowledge and interest in the Psychology of Ageing
  • Knowledge, ability, and expertise to lead and contribute to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision
  • Knowledge, ability, and expertise to train students on relevant clinical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a wide range of stakeholders (including academic and non-academic audiences)
  • Excellent organisational, administrative and planning skills
  • Expertise in the design and conduct of research related to ageing including aspects such as ethics, practice, and governance
  • Evidence of collaborative, inter-disciplinary working
  • Experience of leadership and citizenship roles commensurate with career stage and pathway
  • Experience of supervising and/or mentoring early career researcher/clinicians

Qualifications

  • PhD or Professional Doctorate in Psychology or related discipline
