About the Role
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Materials and Environmental Chemistry, to work with Prof Marina Resmini for a period of 12 months, funded by the EC (www.nanostem.qmul.ac.uk) in the Department of Chemistry, within the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The overall aim of the project is to evaluate the effect that artificial weathering has on the surface chemistry of a variety of polymeric materials, to contribute to the understanding of their potential environmental impact. The work will be done in collaboration with industrial partners, who will be providing some of the samples.
About You
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the weathering protocols, characterizing the samples using a combination of physico-chemical techniques, and evaluating the biodegradability using specific assays.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a Chemistry related area, prior to taking up the appointment. The research project requires experience in polymer chemistry and modern characterization techniques, in particular gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR, mass spectrometry, and surface tensiometry. Some experience of biodegradability measurements would be desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to manage their own academic research, administrative activities, and also contribute to the successful management of the research laboratory.
