We are looking for a Head of Research and Teaching Computing Unit and Deputy Head of Computing.

This post is advertised as full-time (35 hours per week) however; we are open to considering part-time when part of a job share arrangement, or flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

The opportunity:

We are looking for a highly experienced, competent and capable individual to lead the provision of dedicated computing services and support for Research and Teaching in the School of Informatics, as well as deputise for the Head of Computing in a number of key areas.

You will be responsible for service delivery, strategy and leadership of the computing services and support run by the Research and Teaching Computing Unit in the School of Informatics, managing a team delivering computing infrastructure and service support to a community of 450 staff and 2000 students across multiple buildings on the University central and Kings Buildings campuses. This includes highly specialist support and training for the Schoolʼs research facilities and teaching facilities, including our own local research and teaching environment.

You will be the Deputy Head of Computing for the School of Informatics, with delegated responsibility for managing spending, delivering computing projects and for contributing to key strategic decisions.

  • You have experience of software development in an academic context.
  • You have an interest in Informatics or DevOps demonstrated by a personal specialism and expert technical understanding of one specific area.
  • You can demonstrate a good knowledge of SQL and related technologies.
  • You can demonstrate you know how to programme in Python.
  • You have worked in areas such as cloud computing; web services; machine learning; GPU compute; database design.
