Sydney Nursing School teaches approximately 1,200 undergraduate and 700 postgraduate nursing coursework

students. There are around 75 higher degree research students. The School is also home to the Discipline of Nutrition and Dietetics, which has offered a training programme for Accredited Practising Dietitians since 1967. Academic dietitians are responsible for the professionally accredited two-year Master of Nutrition and Dietetics degree with about 150 students currently enrolled. The school’s major research themes include cancer, infection and immunity, injury and acute illness, mental health and chronic disease and ageing, including the role of diet in the prevention and management of obesity, chronic diseases and healthy ageing. 

The school has strong research links with major Sydney healthcare providers, community organizations and NGOs and receives funding from over 40 international, federal and local private and public bodies. 

About you (skills, capabilities, and experience) 

We are seeking a Professor of Nursing (Patient Safety & System Design) - Level E. The successful candidate will be a leading authority within their discipline and have an international reputation for excellence. This position is being created to advance our work in care systems. We are particularly keen for the successful applicant to build on and establish new collaborations between the Sydney Nursing School and across the Faculty of Medicine and Health in person-centred practice and human factors related to patient safety. With a focus on patient safety and system redesign we aim to generate globally impactful research that will bring a person-centred perspective to patient safety and health system design and redesign. The successful candidate will actively lead research and scholarship, academic debate, policy development and innovation within the University and the broader community. They will also lead the establishment of a research network or centre in the Faculty of Medicine & Health and provide leadership to research endeavours in Sydney Nursing School. The position holder will also contribute to the leadership and strategic direction of the University by participating in collegial governance and decision making and foster a culture of excellence through guiding academic staff and students toward success. 

The successful candidate must have:

  • PhD in Nursing or relevant health-related area
  • International reputation as an authority in their discipline with a supporting research profile including competitive research grants, publications and evidence of recognition within the broader research community
  • Significant experience in people leadership and management within the higher education sector, including demonstrated excellence in supervising and/or mentoring others to success
  • An in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector 

Term and remuneration 

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications. 

The term of the appointment is 3-year fixed term contract role on a full-time basis. Visa Sponsorship and relocation assistance will also be provided if required.
