Project Description

The School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at Oxford Brookes University is seeking an independent and highly motivated candidate from a science or technology discipline.

In this project our aim is to find a solution to the problem of automatic review classification and analysis for online app reviews. Apps may receive many reviews from users, but this abundance of data can make it difficult for new users to find the most helpful information they need to make decisions about app choice and purchase. The classification of helpful and unhelpful reviews has become an important stage in review analysis. In this research we will assess the use of machine learning to classify app reviews by analysing a large dataset of reviews extracted from the Apple App Store.

The objectives are:

  1. To design and implement an AI that will automatically classify and analyse reviews.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the new AI.

The research questions are:

  1. Is machine-learning classification more effective than using textual context with stopwords?
  2. Can classification performance be improved by including meta-data?
  3. Can we classify reviews into real or fake?

The essential selection criteria include:

  • At least an upper second class degree in a Science or Technology discipline.
  • Evidence of good programming skills.
  • Capability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and organisational skills.
  • A real passion and commitment for research.

The successful candidate will:

  • Collaborate with students and staff from across the School
  • Carry out original research contributing to the School’s work in computer science
  • Participate in research meetings and undertake supplementary research training.
  • Receive training on research and professional skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a first or upper second-class honours degree from a Higher Education Institution in Computing, Computer Science or acceptable equivalent qualification.

Non-UK Applicants must have a valid IELTS Academic test certificate (or equivalent) with an overall minimum score of 7.0 and no score below 6.0 issued in the last 2 years by an approved test centre.
