Cardiff University was established in 1883. Our motto, Gwirionedd, Undod a Chytgord - ‘truth, unity and concord’ - sets out our founding commitment to work together to make a positive and lasting difference to our communities and continues to express our commitment today.
Based in the capital city of Wales, where education has been devolved since the creation of the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 and the Senedd in 2020, we are one of the largest universities in the UK and a member of the Russell Group. Our vision is to be a world-leading, research-excellent, and educationally outstanding university with a transformative social, cultural and economic impact on Cardiff, Wales, the UK and the world.
We are firmly grounded in our sense of place. As the largest university in Wales– and a major employer, with more than 7,000 staff – we work with society, industry and government to help overcome the most urgent challenges of our times.
We have recently celebrated the arrival of our new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wendy Larner, the first woman in the history of the University to hold this position. We are looking forward to her leadership and Professor Larner’s development of a new strategic direction for the University.
We are now seeking to appoint our next Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering. Comprised of seven academic Schools, the College is internationally renowned for its excellent research and teaching and is committed to solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges. There is great potential for the College to build on its excellence across research and teaching and benefit from investments in the University’s infrastructure such as the Translational Research Hub. The next Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head will be responsible for providing strategic and academic leadership, vision and direction to the College, and developing and delivering a new strategy which will align with the overarching university strategy in collaboration with colleagues across the College, the wider University, and with external partners.
The next Pro Vice-Chancellor will possess a proven track record of effective academic leadership and management and an inclusive, interdisciplinary and collaborative approach that will embody and champion our university values across our diverse College and University community. They will bring experience of delivering strategy around the student experience and will be an inspirational leader who will be committed to delivering outstanding and innovative education, research and knowledge exchange and who will ensure financial and environmental sustainability and the fulfilment of our civic mission ambitions.
