Applications are invited from academics of international standing for the position of Head of School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate an international research reputation, a commitment to teaching excellence and significant management experience. They will be of exceptional calibre, able to provide both academic and executive leadership and to act as the external advocate of the School to a range of stakeholders, nationally and internationally.
The School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh is a research-led international leader in its field. The Times Higher Education Research Power index rank the School 1st in Scotland and 4th in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework 2021 for the quality, scale and breadth of research. The School is also committed to excellent and innovative teaching and offers a wide range of Honours and Integrated Master degree programmes, along with four MSc programmes.
The School has experienced a period of significant growth in both staff and students in recent years, (as a result of which the School now has a community of approximately 1500 staff and students), and currently has an annual turnover of £43M (comprising research grant income of £25M, REF/REG income of £4.5M, and student-fee/teaching income of £13.5M).
We seek a leader with the strategic vision and leadership skills to ensure that the School continues to build on its existing successes and is strongly positioned for the future. The successful candidate will be appointed to an open-ended Professorial post within the School, and a five year term as Head of School.

The University will be supported in this appointment process by the executive search firm Veredus. Longlisted candidates will be invited for interview with Veredus, to be held w/c 27th November 2023, following which the panel will agree a shortlist. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a visit with the School w/c 8th January 2024 and then a focus group and final panel interviews on 18th and 19th January 2024 respectively.
