Job Summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate in Fine Chemical Innovation Analysis to join our vibrant team of researchers. This post is part of a wider initiative exploring innovation and productivity in different industrial sectors in the UK. This specific project focusses on a sectoral study on innovation and competitiveness in the UK fine chemicals manufacturing industry.

Our objectives for this project are to understand the current landscape and challenges faced, benchmark the current innovation performance historically and against other competitor countries, and develop insights into the types of interventions which will be required to ensure the sector’s future sustainability.

Duties and responsibilities

Your key research duties will include:

  • Developing an understanding of the UK fine chemicals sector and its wider value chain
  • Undertaking a broad analysis of recent trends in the performance of the UK’s fine chemicals sector
  • Undertaking a high level innovation and manufacturing analysis
  • Performing deep dives exploring particular companies
  • Developing conclusions around interventions to improve innovation and productivity in the sector
  • Taking initiatives in planning the research
  • Undertaking a review of existing academic, grey and industrial / policy literature, expert elicitation, stakeholder survey
  • Assisting with the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, including high level modelling and development of KPIs as appropriate

Essential requirements

To be successful in this role you will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in innovation management, industrial economics or a related discipline. You will also have practical experience in a broad range of techniques including literature survey and qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

Further Information

The post is available immediately for a duration of 18 months, with the contract ending by 30 April 2025 at the latest. An extension may be possible depending on research funding. The role is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).

Salary on appointment will be limited to a maximum of SP19, £49,305, depending on experience. Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 to £43,888 per annum.
