The Materials Innovation Factory is revolutionising materials discovery through the development of pioneering digital laboratory spaces, combining academic and industry leading edge research in the field of laboratory robotics and automation. We are now looking for two ambitious and talented individuals to join our team as Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) with expertise in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Software Development. These roles are a unique opportunity to shape the direction of robotics and automation technologies for materials research in the future.
The RTPs will build on a major programme that has already changed the way that materials research is undertaken – for example, by introducing mobile robotic platforms that can perform autonomous experiments over periods of multiple days with no human input (*Nature*, **2020**, *583*, 237).
These posts will augment a 20-person technical team in the MIF and take the intelligent automation of materials research to its next level. Focus will be on building new, cross-cutting and universally applicable capability to target robotics and automation solutions that can address a range of laboratory-based challenges, both in an industry setting and an academic research context.
We seek excellent and motivated individuals with clear ideas for new directions in the automation of materials research. Candidates are welcomed from a range of backgrounds, with extensive experience in an academic or industrial research setting, and with expertise in Artificial Intelligence and/or Software Development, and at least one more technical area from Chemistry/Materials Chemistry, Robotics/Automation Technologies, Coding and/or Machine Learning. These posts are available on a three year fixed terms basis from January 2024 until December 2026.
The University has the right to close the vacancy early if it is deemed that there have been enough applications received.
