Come and discover the kind of impact you can make when you work with some of the best facilities and brightest scientists in the world.

The Central Laser Facility (CLF), part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), provides advanced laser research facilities for UK and international scientists.

The CLF is one of the large facilities within the Science Technology Facilities Council based at the Harwell Campus, and we are an exciting and dynamic department. With the £100M Extreme Photonics Applications Centre under construction and the recently announced £82M Vulcan 20-20 project, CLF will have two of the most powerful and unique laser centres in the world.

About the Role

As the Senior System Architect you will lead the design and development of a modern computing platform to support software developers and scientists in all phases of developing and operating complex laser facilities including EPAC, Vulcan 20-20 and HiLUX.

At the higher band, you will mentor and lead a team of system/DevOps engineers, collaborating with cross-functional teams of scientists, software and network engineers, to understand their requirements and provide infrastructure and tooling solutions that enhance efficiency, reliability, and scalability.

About You

You will have a degree or equivalent experience in a numerate discipline and experience of leading software development in a scientific environment. You should have strong knowledge in Linux operating systems and servers, and experience as a DevOps Engineer - preferably in a scientific or research environment. We are looking for someone with a solid understanding of infrastructure-as-code principles and experience in deploying containerised platforms such as Kubernetes and Docker. Proficiency in Python, version control and CI/CD processes as well as using and maintaining cloud-native applications and systems such as Ansible and Kafka is also a requirement.

To be considered for the higher grade, in addition to the above, you will need to have significant experience from working on a directly relevant project and likely have been responsible for a substantial part of the technical delivery of a project, leading a development team.

  • an excellent defined average salary pension scheme

  • excellent learning and development opportunities
  • visa Sponsorship for candidates applying outside of the UK

Plus many more benefits and wellbeing initiatives that enable our employees to have a great work life balance!
