University of Sheffield - Computer Science

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Sheffield
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students, International Students
Funding amount: £18,622 Funding will cover UK home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at UKRI rate (£18,622 for 2023/24) for 3.5 years

This project aims to tackle the challenges of effectively performing pixel-level classification (aka semantic segmentation) in applications where annotated data for model training is lacking. Although pixel-level classification has evolved a lot in the last ten years with the development of approaches based on deep learning, its use is still limited in many applications due to the difficulty of assembling representative datasets for model training.

About the project

This project is aimed at addressing the issues associated with semantic segmentation in the wild by focusing on one or more of the following machine-learning challenges: unsupervised/self-supervised learning, data-centric learning, human-in-the-loop approaches, and open-set recognition. This project fits into the context of ongoing interdisciplinary research initiatives. The methods developed in this project can benefit and have a direct impact on research associated with environmental monitoring, public health, and assistive technologies.

Informal enquiries are strongly encouraged and should be directed to Dr Jefersson dos Santos (j.santos@sheffield.ac.uk).
