The project:

In this exciting project, we will develop and test a range of novel techniques to reduce noise from aerodynamic components. This will include the use of standard and functionally graded porous materials, perforated sheets with complex hole patterns, etc. The tests will be performed in the National Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel Facility at the University of Bristol and National Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Facility. The successful candidate will be using a range of experimental techniques, including constant temperature anemometers (CTA), particle image velocimetry (PIV), unsteady pressure, beamforming, etc, to investigate noise generation mechanisms and evaluate the performance of new noise control techniques.

This project is funded by Safran Landing Systems and the successful candidate will be co-supervised by an aerodynamic/aeroacoustic specialists from Safran. The candidate will have regular visits and meetings with the Safran team.

Candidate requirements: 

Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of a master’s degree (or international equivalent) in an engineering, science, or mathematics discipline. Applicants without a master's qualification may be considered on an exceptional basis, provided they hold a first-class undergraduate degree. Please note, acceptance will also depend on evidence of readiness to pursue a research degree.

Funding:

Funding is available for home (UK) students only. However, we would welcome applications from overseas students and may be able to accommodate the additional funding requirements.

Minimum tax-free stipend at £19,000 per annum for 3.5 years.
