Improved Aerodynamics & Control of UAVs for atmospheric measurements.
This position is related to a project funded by NERC, involving the industrial partner Menapia. The overall objective is to develop the new generation of UAVs that can be used in the accurate measurement of the flow properties of the atmospheric boundary layer. This will be achieved by characterizing the aerodynamic behaviour of UAVs in steady and unsteady (gusty) conditions via wind tunnel experiments. The developed dataset will then be used to develop aerodynamic models for the UAV, and accurate data-informed flight control systems. For more information regarding the project please see here.
The post holder will be co-supervised by Dr Steiros (aerodynamics) and Dr Mylvaganam (control). The post holder will also receive technical input from the industrial partner Menapia, and will benefit from visits in Menapia’s field test site in Leeds.
The post-holder will gain experience in:
- Experimental Methods in Aerodynamics;
- Theoretical Modelling in Aerodynamics;
- Machine Learning;
- UAV design.
Applicants should have a strong background in fluid mechanics and/or control theory. Applications are invited from candidates who possess (or expect to gain) a first-class honours MEng or higher degree or equivalent in Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Computing or related areas.
