Managing and reducing our indirect, “Scope 3” carbon emissions is one of the most challenging and critical emerging areas of environmental action. Tackling our direct emissions is not enough if organisations are truly to demonstrate their commitment to action on climate change.
From our world-leading research on numerous sustainability-related themes to teaching and learning with our 40,000 students, sustainability is at the core of everything we do at The University of Manchester.
We’re already committed to achieving zero direct carbon emissions by 2038, and critically, within our “carbon budget”. This year we’ve gone further by setting a target for our Scope 3 emissions of net zero by 2050. We’ve made a great start on estimating our footprint and planning what we need to reduce it, but there is much more to be done.
We also need to communicate all aspects of our environmental work to the thousands of people who study, work, and feel connected to The University. We’re proud of our new Environment Strategy, and want staff and students to know what we’re up to and how they can contribute. Engagement and communications is critical to our work going forward.
We have a rare opportunity for a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to join our Environmental Sustainability team. We’re looking for someone who cares deeply about environmental matters and can use that passion to make sector-leading progress on our Scope 3 footprint and share our story.
We’d love to hear from you if you can help us take our environmental ambitions to the next level through commitment and skill.
In return you’ll be a key part of a small but influential team which thrives on collaboration and mutual support. You’ll get the opportunity to work with leading academics on climate change, communication and other critical issues. You’ll also work with colleagues across Professional Services, who ensure the University is run safely, efficiently and sustainably on behalf of our academic community. We hope the role will provide you with a sense of purpose and belonging along with a competitive salary. This is an opportunity to create change and make a real difference.
