This PhD project is a part of a larger EU-funded multi-institutional project entitled ‘eVTOL Multi-Fidelity Hybrid Design and Optimization for Low Noise and High Aerodynamic Performance’ (eVTOLUTION). The candidate will perform mid-fidelity UVLM-VPM based simulations to characterise the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of both isolated and tandem rotor configurations. The candidate will also develop multi-fidelity machine learning models based on mid-fidelity numerical data enriched by high-fidelity experimental data to construct surrogate models, in order to enable design optimization for these configurations. The candidate will work closely with his/her experimental counterpart on this project who will perform the complementary experiments in the state of the art aeroacoustic wind tunnel at the University of Bristol.

Knowledge of aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, programming
Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of a pass at master’s degree level (or international equivalent) in a science, mathematics or engineering discipline. Applicants without a master's qualification may be considered on an exceptional basis, provided they hold a first-class undergraduate degree. Please note, acceptance will also depend on evidence of readiness to pursue a research degree.

Funding: Minimum tax-free stipend at £20,000 per annum.
