The role

The role holder develops, tests, and supports trial systems including project managing small development projects for clinical trials. This includes gathering and documenting system requirements, defining and estimating the project tasks, allocating tasks to other team members and ensuring the allocated tasks are completed and performed to the required standard. The role holder assists with improving the efficiency of system development by identifying and recommending improvements in the operational procedures and software development tools.

What will you be doing?

  • Use initiative and collaborate with colleagues to develop complex software solutions and information systems.
  • Advise on and propose changes in work standards, procedures, plans, priorities and office systems to improve operational efficiency and quality of service in own work area.
  • Meet with clients to collect, analyse and document requirements for system development.
  • Write test plans and test systems developed by other team members and provide feedback.
  • Provide support for all in-house developed information systems, providing advice and/or training to users and authoring and reviewing technical documentation and user guides.
  • Identify and solve problems including issues raised on the helpdesk, complaints and escalated issues from colleagues.
  • Plan and manage allocated IT projects independently, creating project plans, allocating tasks to other members of the team, ensuring tasks are completed on time and to the expected standard and reporting on progress.

You should apply if

You have:

  • A good working knowledge of designing, developing, delivering, testing, and deploying web applications, databases and data platforms
  • First degree in Computing, Information Technology or related subject or equivalent qualification/experience
  • Substantial experience of relational database design and Structured Query Language (SQL), preferably using Microsoft SQL Server
  • A flexible attitude to working both as part of a busy team and independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-tasking, and prioritising as necessary with excellent time management skills and an ability to work to deadlines
  • Proactive approach to problem solving and idea creation
  • An understanding of the importance of data protection and security
  • A knowledge of clinical trials, NHS environment or Agile development methods are desirable

Contract type: Open-ended with funding for one year

Shift pattern: 35 hours per week
