The role

The University of Bristol seeks two external members for its Audit and Risk Committee, offering a unique chance to contribute expertise to a globally esteemed institution. Ideal candidates possess senior professional experience in audit, risk, strategic decision-making, and financial reporting within large, complex organisations. Alignment with the University's Strategy and Values and an interest in higher education are essential. The positions commence on March 2024 and January 2025, each for a potential three-year term, with eligibility for reappointment for up to two consecutive terms.

Kindly be aware that this is a voluntary position; however, reasonable travel and expenses will be reimbursed.

What will you be doing?

Audit and Risk Committee (ARC) members at the University of Bristol oversee financial reporting, internal controls, and risk management, playing a crucial role in maintaining financial integrity, safeguarding stakeholders' interests, and ensuring effective risk management. Their efforts foster transparency, accountability, and good governance. Members act in the University's best interests and not as representatives of any specific part or group. Key responsibilities include holding the Executive accountable for University leadership, offering constructive challenge and support, ensuring robust control and risk management systems, and assuring sustainability and financial viability.

Selection Criteria

  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for the University's values and mission.
  • Proven board-level experience, either professionally or through volunteer roles.
  • Strong dedication to higher education and alignment with the University's mission, strategy, and objectives.
  • Understanding of university governance distinct from management.
  • Insight into strategic challenges faced by the University and the role of the Board and its Committee.

Audit and Risk Committee Expertise:

  • Credible executive-level experience in large and complex organisations.
  • Proficiency in audit processes, development of policies, procedures, and risk management.
  • Preferably a qualified accountant with prior service on a corporate or public body audit committee.
  • Professional experience in finance, IT, data protection, cyber security, higher education, large change programs, and legal and regulatory compliance.

All appointments will be subject to approval by the University Board of Trustees.
