Do you have a passion for teaching biology? Join us as an Associate Lecturer in Biological Sciences delivering introductory cell biology classes to our undergraduate bioscience students.
You will contribute to teaching on the first year of our BSc Biomedicine programme, giving an introduction to molecular cell biology to students from a variety of backgrounds who will be in the second term of their undergraduate studies. You will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching within the biological sciences and to providing support to students that fosters academic growth.
The appointment is to cover a 15-credit, Level 4 module, Cell Membranes and Bioenergetics (CMB). CMB is taught in the Spring term (Jan-Mar) and you will deliver two instances: one in the afternoon and one in the evening, both on Tuesdays. The work would require 54 contact hours of teaching as well as organization, communication with students, student support, and assessment marking. The module syllabus has been designed and the teaching materials already exist although you will have some freedom to refine these and also to contribute to the design of the assessments, subject to the specifications in place.
You will have a PhD in biological sciences, or a related discipline; a sound knowledge of cell biology; and excellent communication and presentation skills. You will have experience of classroom teaching at undergraduate level; proven ability to deliver material effectively in a classroom setting is essential. Experience of and/or willingness to develop skill in providing learning materials via a virtual learning environment (such as Moodle) is required. Evidence of having supported students from a range of backgrounds to achieve their potential is highly desirable. The role will require you to work effectively as part of a busy team and also independently.
