The Social Anthropology Department at the University of Manchester is a research-oriented department delivering excellent teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students. To further strengthen our research and teaching portfolio, the Department wishes to appoint a suitable candidate to the Max Gluckman Chair. The Chair was previously held by Prof. John Gledhill until his retirement.

We are looking for candidates with outstanding research records, with a particular interest in scholars whose conceptual innovations have made a substantial original contribution to the field of social anthropology. The successful candidate is expected to take a full and leading part in the department, working with colleagues and doctoral candidates to further shape an already excellent department. He or she is also expected to teach on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

We are not looking for any specific expertise, but rather for an outstanding and exciting candidate with a high level of research success and commitment to furthering Manchester anthropology. Interested candidates are invited to email Soumhya Venkatesan, Head of Department, for informal discussions about suitability and fit. We can also arrange for a ‘no-commitment on either side’ visit to Manchester for interested candidates who meet all the criteria and who wish to apply for the post.

Deadline for applications is the 25th of January 2024. Interviews of short-listed candidates will be held in March/April 2024 and the successful candidate will take up the post in September 2024, although this may be negotiable if necessary.

Applicants should submit the following:

  • Academic CV (20 pages maximum)
  • List of publications (please star three that you would submit for consideration if asked)
  • Statement on research (1000 words)
  • Statement on leadership experience and vision, including within and beyond the university, to the discipline in general, and beyond academia (1000 words).
  • Statement on teaching, including teaching philosophy and evaluations (500 words)
  • Cover-letter indicating fit in Manchester Anthropology and any other relevant information not contained in any of the above.
  • Names of 3 referees, including contact details.

Please ensure you give the reference number above in any communications.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.

Hybrid working arrangements may be considered.
