Project description: 

Applicants are invited for a fully funded 3-year PhD studentship to explore the complex flow behaviour of glacial sediments. You will join a multidisciplinary team on a project that is a collaboration between the Glaciology and Complex Fluids Research Groups at Swansea University.  

Glacial sediments have widely varying flow (rheological) properties that influence the dynamics of the overlying glacier. With ongoing, alarming changes to the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, there is an urgent need to develop accurate glacial sediment models that can help predict future ice loss and sea-level change. 

In this multidisciplinary project you will develop new laboratory experiments to make accurate measurements of fluid flow and deformation in the sediment bed, and how these are influenced by fluid pressure and flow rates, and the properties of the glacial sediment (granular size/shape distributions). These parameter studies will inform development of new theoretical models for glacier-sediment interactions and how these influence present and future ice sheet behaviour.  

The PhD project forms part of a wider collaborative study with colleagues at University of Oxford and University of Cambridge.  

We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and capable individual keen to take on the challenges of a multidisciplinary approach combining glaciology with experimental work to be conducted using cutting edge facilities in the Complex Fluids Research Group.  

Eligibility

Candidates must hold an Upper Second Class (2.1) honours degree in Engineering or similar relevant science discipline. If you are eligible to apply for the scholarship (i.e. a student who is eligible to pay the UK rate of tuition fees) but do not hold a UK degree, you can check our comparison entry requirements. Please note that you may need to provide evidence of your English Language proficiency.

English Language: IELTS 6.5 Overall (with no individual component below 5.5) or Swansea University recognised equivalent.

Funding Details

This scholarship covers the full cost of UK tuition fees and an annual stipend of £18,622.

Additional research expenses will also be available.
