The project

This project will aim to gain control over ultrasonic wave beam profiles – similar to the way light is manipulated in optics and photonics - using strategies such as geometric focusing, waveguiding and acoustic metamaterials, capitalising on the flexibility of the generation and detection geometries.

Magnetostriction is a highly efficient way of generating ultrasound waves. Magnetostrictive alloys can be formed into patches. Such patch transducers can produce shear displacements and generate different types of ultrasound waves when excited with a magnetic field. Patch transducers can be simply cut or even sprayed onto the surface of a sample. In this way, intricate acoustic field geometries may be created and used as an exciting novel tool for structural health monitoring in engineering to control the behaviour of soft matter, including elastomers and liquid crystals, with broad applications in the fields of Physics, Engineering and Biomedicine.

The main objectives would be

  • Achieve geometric focusing using magnetostrictive patch transducers
  • Explore the possibility of producing active acoustic metamaterials
  • Generate complex beam profiles and ultrasound field patterns for a range of applications (e.g. with sensitivity to specific defect types in structural health monitoring context and ability to control soft matter)

You will be involved in practical work as well as modelling, will work in an interdisciplinary environment and will have excellent opportunities to engage with industry and academic institutions nationally and internationally.

Eligibility: UK candidates with a first-class or 2.1 honours degree in a relevant discipline, such as engineering, material science of physics.

Funding: The award will cover the full tuition fees at the UK student rate plus a stipend of £18,200 per annum for 3.5 years of full-time study.
