About this project

Applications are invited to apply for a PhD in Physics focusing on Astronomy & Astrophysics to work with Kevin Pimbblet on areas of mutual interest. These include galaxy evolution, observational cosmology, dwarf galaxies, clusters of galaxies, AGN, imaging & spectroscopic techniques in the next generation telescopic era and exploitation of UK investment in the same (cf., SKA, LSST, etc.), and applied artificial intelligence.

Astrophysics has seen massive investment nationally and internationally with large observational experiments such as the Square Kilometre Array and LSST being funded directly by the UK community with international collaborators. In parallel to this, the rise of artificial intelligence means that we stand ready to exploit these new data in ways that could not have been thought of decades ago. In turn, entire research fields such as those noted above are moving with pace.

This PhD is unique in the sense that the precise nature of the research is subject to negotiation with Director of the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Modelling (DAIM), Kevin Pimbblet. All applicants must write a broad research proposal as part of their application to outline what they would like to work on. If successful, the Director will work with the applicant to refine the proposal and supervise the resultant project.

For informal inquiries, please contact - Kevin Pimbblet – k.pimbblet@hull.ac.uk

About the research environment

The research will be part of the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Modelling (DAIM), within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, as well as part of the E.A.Milne Centre for Astrophysics, also within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Funding

  • The successful applicant will receive a fee waiver and a maintenance grant / stipend for three years (full-time), which covers the research period of the PhD. The fee waiver for 23/24 is £4,712 (Home fee)/£16,250 (International fees) and the maintenance grant is £18622 per annum. This rises each year in line with the UKRI’s recommended stipend allowance.
  • If you need to move into a fourth year to complete your thesis, please note that you will not receive a tuition fee waiver or maintenance grant during this period and you will be required to pay a continuation fee.
