About Us

Surrey has recently been announced as the Cyber University of the Year at the National Cyber Awards 2023. The Times Higher Education rated Surrey 55th in the world for impact. In the area of Computer Science, we ranked 7th in the national Research Excellence Framework 2021 for the quality of outputs submitted.

Computer Science at Surrey has two thriving research groups, each with an international reputation for research: Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE) and Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS). SCCS has five research themes: security and privacy; cryptography; verification; distributed systems; networked systems. SCCS members are active in at least one theme, with several working also across themes. SCCS is also leading a cross-cutting research activity on digital resilience. NICE focuses on advancing the foundations of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Primarily, NICE investigates deep learning, as well as explainable/interpretable models, and extends their applicability to natural language processing, robotics, healthcare, and other areas.
