PhD Studentship: Chiral Sensors for Neurotransmitters

University of Birmingham - School of Chemistry

Qualification Type: PhD

Closes: 4th February 2024

Neurotransmitters (e.g. dopamine) are key molecules in neuronal communication, making their detection and quantification vital for medical diagnostics and therapeutics. This PhD project will use perylene diimide, an organic fluorophore, to develop non-toxic and non-intrusive optical probes for sensing neurotransmitters in biological media. The key is that the proposed receptors are macrocycles that form configurationally stable enantiomers. Many neurotransmitters are also chiral molecules. This opens up the exciting possibility of using stereoisomerism for the selective recognition and sensing of chiral neurotransmitters (e.g. L-adrenaline > dopamine).

This project is jointly supervised by Dr Tim Barendt (Chemistry - see tab-lab.org) and Prof Dirk-Peter Herten (Cardiovascular Sciences - see https://tinyurl.com/yc86d2s4), a multidisciplinary project combining synthetic supramolecular chemistry (Barendt) and fluorescence microscopy and cell biology (Herten). Therefore, the student will broaden and strengthen their skills through training in both disciplines, including training on a range of state-of-the-art instrumentation (e.g. isothermal titration calorimetry, microscopes).
