Faculty of Business and Law

Sitting within the Manchester Metropolitan Business School's Strategy, Enterprise and Sustainability (SES) Department, the Centre for Enterprise (CfE) transforms academic research into practical solutions to empower North West micro, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) to develop, innovate and grow. The Business School is triple accredited (EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA), placing us within a global elite of institutions for business education and research. We are also the UK's sector leader for degree apprenticeships, where we work in partnership with a number of blue-chip employers.

The Centre for Enterprise has collaborated with over 2,500 businesses and delivered over £45 million worth of programmes. In 2021/22 alone we directly supported 466 SMEs over 9 programmes. In 2022/23 we successfully secured a further £6.4 million to run SME training programmes specialising in Digital Innovation and Net Zero.

Our ethos is to transform lives, businesses and communities across the region. We focus on the support local business leaders need to upskill, embrace emerging technologies and boost productivity. Everything we do is with a view to provide SMEs with the tools needed to contribute to the economy, be more resilient and have the support they require to achieve their ambitions.

The role

This is an academic role at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, which will have a key position in the Centre for Enterprise team to support our Innovation Accelerator project - The Centre for Digital Innovation. An Innovate UK funded project, we are creating a supercluster of digital innovation support across the North West, leading a consortium of universities and industry partners.

The position requires academic input into business capacity building programme design, as well as industry partner liaison and leading some delivery to small firms.

Working with the Innovation Lead and Academic Lead for the Centre for Digital innovation, the key responsibilities of the role are to:

  • Develop and co-develop academic content on innovation, capacity and business models
  • Pro-actively engage with industry and academic partners, supporting the aims of the project
  • Work within a fast paced, talented team of business-facing academics, developing the Centre's academic profile and supporting our SME network across the North West
  • Undertake some teaching and education responsibilities the Department of Strategy, Enterprise and Sustainability

Knowledge & Experience

  • Be at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level
  • Have an academic record in Knowledge Exchange (KE), commercially funded programme delivery and/or SME/executive education provision
  • Have specialist knowledge relevant to the thematic area, such as understanding of the UK small firm landscape, innovation, or digital technologies.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate a clear vision for a wide range of audiences, the ability to negotiate effectively, and develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Have evidence of, and commitment to, ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Have a commitment to equality and diversity policies and objectives.

Other desirable requirements:

  • Experience of working with relevant sector and policy bodies
  • Experience of developing funding bids
  • Experience of delivering publicly funded enterprise projects
  • Experience at Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer level
  • Be able to travel as necessary within the UK and overseas
