Specialist Instructional Officer (x23 posts)

Ministry of Defence

Join the most exceptional military aviation workplace.

Tasked with protecting the nation, our assets and our borders, The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is a unique and exciting place in which to develop your career. We are an inclusive and friendly organisation in which our people are given the skills and training opportunities they need to excel in their work, and it is against this backdrop that you could find the biggest challenge of your career.

As a member of The Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (which sits within The Defence College of Technical Training), you will help us provide Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel with a world-class education. We are currently in the process of relocating to MOD Lyneham, and this has resulted in the creation of 23 Specialist Instructional Officer roles within our team. These roles are available across three teams: Electrical Training Section (ETS); Workshops Training Section (WTS); and

Mechanical Engineering Training Flight (METF).

With every day providing you with plenty of variety, you will deliver Trade Group 5 initial and specialist trade training. Specifically, you will help RAF military students enhance their technical capabilities in relation to Ground Support Equipment and Military Transport – though the ways in which you could get involved are wide and varied. For example, you might be tasked with creating a theoretical and practical curriculum, in which you will produce lesson plans and course materials. Or you might instruct military students directly after assessing their training needs, ensuring they are adhering to all safety briefings, or act as an examination invigilator. However you get involved, you will find plenty of support from experienced colleagues.

This is a unique opportunity to embark on a teaching career in a fast-paced environment. To make the most of this opportunity you will therefore have a Level 3 (or equivalent) apprenticeship with a military ground engineering background, plus an understanding of the relevant management practices and trade policy. For those joining the ETS, this will be electrical engineering knowledge, while WTS and METF employees will have an understanding of workshops engineering or mechanical engineering respectively. Crucially you will enjoy sharing expertise with students of varying degrees of knowledge, so you will be able to explain complicated ideas to a wide range of audiences. Capable of managing your own time and workload, you will be a confident public-speaker.

In turn, we can help you find a good work-life balance, with the chance to discuss alternative working patterns with your Line Manager. You will also benefit from exceptional training and development opportunities including access to our Defence Trainer course (where relevant), plus the chance to shadow a General Technician in your discipline. A wide range of discounts and a £7,641 Defined Benefit Pension Scheme will make up part of your benefits package, and you will receive 25 days paid annual leave rising by 1 day per completed year of service to a maximum 30 days and eight public holidays per year, plus Leave for HM The King's birthday.
