Human Genomics Team Leader

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) - Service Teams

About the team/job

Recent advances in technology and analysis have revealed significant opportunities to further our understanding of the diversity and impact of human genetics (such as the first full length telomere-to-telomere human genome and the first release of the human pangenome).  Furthermore, how genomic data is being used to understand the link between genotype and phenotype, and how this impacts clinical medicine, is growing in importance.  As a result, we are excited to launch a Team Leader EMBL Faculty position to lead the development of human genomic resources at EMBL-EBI

Your role

Your primary responsibility will be to lead the development and delivery of data services concentrated around human variation and regulation. The existing portfolio that you will be responsible for includes medically relevant resources such as the Ensembl Variant Effect Predictor (VEP), Gene2Phenotype, The International Genome Sample Resource (IGSR), and the DECIPHER database. These resources need to work in concert with each other as well as with Ensembl and other data resources at EMBL-EBI such as UniProtKB, Human Cell Atlas and the PRIDE proteomics database. A critical part of this role will be to work with key collaborators to ensure data is shared effectively into other settings, for example RefSeq and gnomAD. You will also work with senior Ensembl staff to develop EMBL-EBI’s genomics strategy overall, such as the introduction of additional datasets, new data types and approaches for analysing and displaying the data.

As Team Leader for Human Genomics, you will manage a multidisciplinary team of approximately 20 people who develop the portfolio of resources, including software developers, bioinformaticians and data curators.

The fundamentally important part of this role is to manage the data resources in such a way that they meet the needs of the research community. To do this you will need to bring (and almost certainly expand upon once in the role) a broad knowledge of the field of human genomics research. To anticipate the future needs of the research community you will need to think strategically and keep up-to-date with new developments and trends in the field. This will require engagement and collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders (both academic and industrial) in Europe and globally; you will represent EMBL-EBI externally in the area of human genomics. Fundraising through grant writing in collaboration with others will be necessary to support the development of existing and potentially new data services. In time, we expect that you will build an understanding of the role of the EMBL-EBI human genetics resources in the community, as well as the relationship between research data, clinical practice and policy.

We need an inspiring and engaging leader who understands the importance of teamwork and collaboration, and is focused on the delivery of key tasks. This position is a unique opportunity for an ambitious scientist with a passion for open data, who would like to make their contribution to science via the delivery of high-impact resources that are used by many thousands of researchers and clinicians.

This role reports to the Section Head for Genome Assembly and Annotation, Rob Finn.

You have

  • A PhD degree in a relevant field.
  • Good understanding of the bioinformatics data landscape, for example, data standards and analysis workflows.
  • Expertise using genomics data, analysis methods, and/or the different types of data that are utilised for genome annotation. This could be demonstrated via research articles, datasets or software products.
  • Project management and/or staff management experience.
  • An understanding of modern software development processes.
  • Good communication skills - ability to engage within the wider human genomics community.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a collaborative spirit.
  • An established profile in the international research community in an area related to human genome annotation, regulation, medical genomics and/or variation.
  • The ambition and drive to develop high-impact data services for the wider research community.

You might also have

  • Experience in writing successful grants.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • A track record in leading scientific projects.
  • Experience designing databases, developing websites and/or working with big data.
  • Participation in multi-institute
  • Presented at international meetings.
