Project description

Aerofoil noise originates from two primary mechanisms: the unsteadiness of flow within the boundary layer of an aerofoil interacting with the downstream trailing edge, and turbulence in the upstream incoming flow interacting with the leading edge of the aerofoil. Over the past two decades, our team has been actively engaged in the development of various aerofoil geometries, focusing on both leading and trailing edges, with the goal of minimizing aerofoil noise. This effort has resulted in the filing of nearly 10 patents and the publication of numerous papers aimed at comprehending the mechanisms behind these innovative aerofoils. Some of these advancements are currently integrated into industrial fans, wind turbines, and various aerospace applications. Despite these achievements, there is an ongoing pursuit of pioneering technologies that do not compromise aerodynamic performance.

This Ph.D. project aims to delve into the realm of metamaterials, exploring concepts to further mitigate aerofoil noise. Metamaterials, characterized by their unique properties, present an intriguing avenue for noise reduction in aerofoil applications. Through this research, we seek to advance the understanding and application of metamaterials, pushing the boundaries of technology to enhance aerofoil performance while addressing the critical issue of noise reduction.

The Acoustics group at ISVR is a globally recognized centre for the study of sound and vibration. Requirements:

  • Degree in Engineering.
  • Interest and some experience in experimental work or analytical method development.
  • Strong foundation in mathematics and computing (MATLAB, PYTHON, etc.) for data analysis.
