The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering are seeking a Research Associate to join a cutting-edge project developing reconfigurable microwave metamaterials using Aerosol Jet Printing (AJP) technology.
The successful candidate will work on a project to overcome the fabrication challenges that have hindered progress in the field of reconfigurable metamaterials, particularly at higher frequencies. They will investigate using AJP to fabricate reconfigurable metamaterials by "spraying" tuneable material onto a substrate, then spraying the conductive pattern of the metasurface on top. In particular, different kinds of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) will be used as the tuneable material. This will enable reconfigurable metamaterials to be fabricated directly onto a platform in a single integrated process. The main objectives of the project are to:
The Research Associate will play a key role in this project, working on the electromagnetic design, simulation and measurement of the metasurface element. They will also work closely with an expert in AJP to investigate a diverse range of materials and ensure the devices are easy to fabricate. The candidate will have the opportunity to use measurement equipment in the state-of-the-art UKRI National mmWave Facility, which is hosted at Sheffield. This is a unique opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge research with significant interest from industrial partners in translating your work into practical applications, and to be at the forefront of the next generation of communications, sensing and imaging.
If you are a highly motivated and talented individual with a passion for research, then we encourage you to apply for this exciting position.
Applicants who accept a conditional offer of appointment must meet the requirement of the right to work in the UK and complete a basic background check. The background check, essential for the nature of the position, will be conducted by DSTL (Defence Science & Technology Laboratory) or the UK Government.
