Job Summary

The Department of Earth Science and Engineering is seeking a Software Engineer in Computational Thinking Pedagogy and AI. You will lead the design and implementation of a range of novel digital technologies to support training and skills development in the area of computational thinking (CT). This is an exciting opportunity to join an existing team and interact with a number of related activities and like-minded researchers across Imperial College London on the use of AI and novel digital tools to support modern pedagogy.

You will work within a team of academics, teachers, researchers and other software engineers to deliver software solutions, including the use of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) methods such as modern large language models (LLMs).

Working with a full-time researcher on the same project, you will deliver and test prototype algorithms and tools to be deployed in our academic community and beyond.

Duties and responsibilities

Will include:

  • Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of the new software.
  • Work with project leads and other stakeholders to define software requirements and develop a high level plan for development, as part of an agile process.
  • Make software architecture decisions based on agreed requirements, providing justifications for decisions with documented evidence.
  • Be the recognised technical expert on the development of the coding for this project and its implementation.
  • Employ software development best practices including using distributed version control, engaging in code review, test driven development, continuous integration and the generation of high quality user documentation.

Essential requirements

  • Current understanding and deep knowledge in a computational based subject areas, for example in computing, mathematics, physics or engineering
  • Significant coding and software engineering skills and experience
  • Experience in making Architecture decisions within Software Engineering
  • Expertise in cloud architectures
  • Experience with agile development methods and working in a DevOps culture
  • Expertise in building secure software and systems
  • Experience in Project Management within a Software Engineering setting
  • Experience in dealing with different stakeholders, at different levels within a process
