Background

An exciting opportunity for a Lead Developer to join the Integrations and Systems Development Team at the University of Birmingham. As a senior member of this team, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and support of student administration services. This role will also be responsible for student system development on a large step change project Transforming Student Acquisition Processes (TSAP) as the University implements Microsoft Dynamics 365.

The primary responsibility of the Lead Developer (Integration and Systems) is to deliver quality software solutions on time and to budget that meet the needs of the organisation and to provide third line support for those solutions once they are live. 

This is a senior technical role suiting someone with previous Banner development experience. Experience of working with other student record systems is also desirable. We are looking for a driven, team player who is continually learning and comfortable providing technical leadership and mentoring to other developers in the team. 

Day to day you will be working within a team of 5 developers. You will also work closely with the other IT Services teams and stakeholders across the institution to deliver new features and services as well as supporting the day-to-day operations of student administration. 

Main Duties

  • Develop tactical and strategically significant digital solutions utilising multiple technologies. 
  • Lead the use of source control systems to automate and enhance delivery processes. 
  • Lead the use of Agile Scrum techniques to develop services. 
  • Grow and share knowledge of specific technical areas as required within the team. 
  • Lead the ongoing technical support and advice for services. 
  • Lead on the identification of accessibility requirements and implement solutions to the required standard. 
  • Lead and mentor other technical members of the team including apprentices by providing technical leadership and vision in the team’s software development approach. 
  • Champion the development and exploitation of student systems in the organisation by recognising new strategic applications and capabilities of our services.
  • Initiate and manage investigation and development of new features and identify and promote their benefits to the organisation.
  • Collaborate with other teams to share best practice, experience, and knowledge.
  • Collaborate with team colleagues to craft solutions together, with an ability to communicate technical needs to non-technical colleagues. 
  • Keep abreast of technological practices and trends to continuously improve ways of working. 
  • Lead the development of student systems ensuring consistency with specified requirements. 

Person Specification or Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Meaningful and relevant experience of software development on Ellucian Banner 
  • Meaningful and relevant experience of software development on Ellucian Ethos 
  • Meaningful and relevant experience of system integration development 
  • Extensive knowledge of Oracle databases and Oracle PL/SQL
  • Experience of developing and using web APIs 
  • Experience of leading on the design and implementation of technical solutions 
  • Experience with Continuous Deployment/Continuous Integration (CI/CD) processes
